It’s Spring, which means it’s yearbook time! Which always brings us to reflect on our school year and how we documented our educational journey.
When we think about documenting our homeschool journey, our minds often jump straight to portfolios, attendance records, and test scores. But today, let’s shift our focus to something equally powerful yet often overlooked: the simple act of capturing our days through photographs.
Beyond The Paperwork Trail
We will absolutely talk about official documentation another time. Today is about something different—something that captures not just what we learned, but how we lived while learning it.
Picture journals serve as:
✨memory anchors that help us remember not just the milestone, but the moment
✨learning stories that capture how education actually happens in our homes
✨ connection points that bridge the gap between those who understand our choice and those still learning to. When folks ask “What did you do in school today?” a photo can answer in ways that words sometimes can’t.
These images become visual reminders that learning and growing together creates an educational story worth treasuring.

Simple Start
As a learning community, we document our days in many ways—we take photos, create Instagram posts, write newsletters, and our personal favorite: create the yearbook. We typically document by season & my goodness does it highlight the beauty and fullness of school year.
You can start your own documentation practice without elaborate systems:
✨One Photo Rule: Commit to taking just one meaningful photo each day
✨Weekly Themes: Focus on different aspects—Monday for morning routines, Wednesday for learning moments, Friday for finished projects
✨Monthly Roundups: At month’s end, select your favorite 10-15 photos and create a simple digital album
Photo documenting isn’t about creating perfect images or proving anything to anyone. It’s about honoring the ordinary moments that make up our extraordinary choice to educate differently.
It’s about recognizing that learning happens in pajamas and bare feet, in kitchen experiments, in the forest where children discover wonder in every season, and on field trips that spark curiosity. Whether gathered around a table or exploring woodland trails, learning unfolds in moments of frustration and breakthrough alike.
Your camera—whether it’s a phone or a professional setup—becomes a tool for celebration, for memory-keeping, and for seeing your educational journey with fresh eyes.

That said, if you’re interested in creating educational moments with us! This summer, Gather has partnered with Eco-Educators, an ecological co-op bringing together passionate homeschool educators committed to enriching the learning journey of children ages 5-13.
Each educator shares their distinct expertise by guiding different segments of our day, weaving together diverse teaching approaches and subject knowledge.
Each session is a week. Each week has one subject. Our first session starts the week of June 9th. We have one space left for June sessions, email us at Gather, if you’re interested!
There will plenty of opportunities for fun in the sun! And of course, these sessions will be documented 💕
