Welcome to Gather Forest School

A Microschool for Children 4-12 Years Old

Kid's Playing Outdoor

Our Mission

Gather Forest School and Community creates and facilitates child-centered, nature-based educational experiences rooted in Black culture and heritage. Our approach honors the profound connection between African American traditions and the natural world, incorporating ancestral wisdom about land stewardship, storytelling, and community care into daily learning.

We use the educational philosophies of Montessori & Waldorf to provide children 4-12 hands-on, nature-based education that fosters creativity and curiosity while learning 100% outdoors. â€‹In addition to daily nature-based education, we offer weekly group learning experiences that bring our community together for deeper exploration and project-based learning. These gatherings might include traditional craft workshops, community gardening projects, or collaborative research studies connecting our children to their cultural heritage and the natural world around them.

Learning at Gather is documented through natural portfolios that capture each child's journey – including photographs of their outdoor discoveries, recordings of their stories and songs, and collections of their nature-inspired art and writing. This authentic assessment approach allows us to honor each child's unique path while ensuring they develop strong academic foundations through meaningful, culturally-responsive experiences.

Our rhythm flows with the seasons, allowing children to fully immerse themselves in the natural cycles of the year while building strong connections to their culture, community, and the earth. Whether they're learning about civil rights leaders while tending our community garden, practicing mathematical concepts through traditional African games, or exploring scientific principles through seasonal observations, our students develop as whole, confident learners who understand their place in both nature and their cultural heritage.

What is Gather?

Gather Forest School operates Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. We are a drop-off program for children 4-12 years old in Decatur, Georgia. We use the educational philosophies of Montessori and Waldorf to provide children with a hands-on, nature-based education.

Our Gather Forest School Community portion provides monthly events in nature around the Atlanta area for adults and children of all ages. In addition to our in-person offerings, we offer a virtual community for those looking to engage and meet up with other Black families in all things nature, sustainability, homeschooling, camping, and more!
